Just a few days after I published “It’s Never Enough,” that discussed the never ending demands on law enforcement, I discovered one of the most sinister demands that has taken the form of a legislative bill in the state of Tennessee.
Body worn cameras have failed officers again and again. The technology is great and getting better. Policy is the problem. In 2018 vendors were telling leaders that the cameras could pull the data off a driver license for later. The meta studies have reported 0% long term behavior change and we are finding the same number of bad apples that we did before adoption. I understand that they are here to stay but officers deserve better policies – policy that lets them watch their video before writing a report, would be a good start. You’re right: this law would ruin law enforcement in Tennessee.
