The Consequences of Courage

The Story of FBI Whistleblower Steve Friend

3

Courage in leadership is rare because of the consequences that often follow it. I speak to leaders each week that have displayed tremendous courage, only to find tough times that await them. I am familiar with this not only personally but with the countless stories I have been told, I can script much of what happens to someone once they rise courageously. The story of Steve Friend is not unique but the particular evil that came after him is a story that must be told.

FBI Career

After spending years in local law enforcement, Steve’s career took a significant turn in 2014 when he was hired by the FBI. His background in local policing and his determination to make a difference in people's lives positioned him well for the challenges ahead. Initially assigned to the Omaha field office and later to Sioux City, Iowa, he worked on Indian reservations, focusing on violent crimes, an area he felt was often overlooked and underserved.

Friend's tenure with the FBI began to shift when he transferred to Daytona Beach, Florida, in 2021, eager to tackle child exploitation and human trafficking cases. However, the changing priorities within the FBI soon became apparent.

Turning Point: Reassignment and Concerns

Shortly after his transfer, the FBI's focus shifted dramatically towards counterterrorism, particularly following the January 6th Capitol riots. Friend found himself reassigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force, a move that raised several concerns for him.

Despite his willingness to adapt, he quickly recognized that the reassignment was misaligned with the FBI's traditional mission. His attempts to continue working on child exploitation cases were met with resistance, leading to a growing sense of unease about the agency's direction.

Whistleblower Disclosures

Friend's discontent reached a boiling point when he was instructed to participate in the arrest of a January 6th suspect. He raised concerns about the appropriateness of deploying a SWAT team for an individual who had previously expressed willingness to cooperate with law enforcement. This, combined with his observations of the FBI's approach to handling cases related to January 6th, led him to make protected whistleblower disclosures.

He felt that the FBI was mismanaging cases to create a narrative of widespread domestic terrorism, which he believed was not supported by the facts. His concerns, however, were not met with understanding. Instead, he faced pushback from senior executives who urged him to follow orders and suppress his worries.

The Fallout: Retaliation and Suspension

In the wake of his disclosures, Friend experienced swift retaliation. The FBI opened an investigation against him, and he was placed on administrative leave. His security clearance was suspended, which left him in a precarious position, unpaid and without access to legal employment.

The emotional toll on Friend and his family was profound. His wife lost her job under suspicious circumstances, and they faced significant financial strain. The FBI's tactics included a gag order, limiting his ability to discuss his situation with anyone, including his family and legal counsel.

Despite these challenges, Friend remained resolute. He continued to document his experiences and sought to share his story, fully aware of the risks involved.

Public Testimony and the Fight for Justice

In May 2023, after enduring months of isolation and scrutiny, Friend publicly testified about his experiences. This testimony was a culmination of his fight against the injustices he witnessed within the FBI. He revealed how the agency's actions contradicted the principles of justice and due process that he had sworn to uphold.

Friend's revelations highlighted the alarming reality of law enforcement practices that prioritize political narratives over truth and accountability. His story resonated with many who began to see the implications of such practices on the broader societal fabric.

The Broader Implications: A Call for Reform

Friend's experiences raise critical questions about the integrity of law enforcement agencies and the need for reform. He argues for a reevaluation of the FBI's practices, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and a return to community-focused policing.

He advocates for several key reforms, including:

  • Disarming the FBI: Making the agency an unarmed investigative body to eliminate the potential for abuse of power.

  • Reevaluating National Security Priorities: Reassessing the focus on counterterrorism, particularly the definitions that label ordinary citizens as threats.

  • Empowering Local Law Enforcement: Strengthening partnerships with local agencies to tackle crime more effectively and ethically.

  • Ending Quota Systems: Eliminating performance metrics that incentivize arrests over justice.

Friend's vision for a reformed FBI is one that prioritizes the protection of citizens' rights and the adherence to constitutional principles. He believes that a return to these foundational values is essential for restoring public trust in law enforcement.

Conclusion: A Journey of Courage

Steve Friend's journey from a dedicated law enforcement officer to an FBI whistleblower underscores the importance of courage in the face of adversity. His story serves as a reminder that standing up for what is right often comes at a personal cost, but it is a necessary endeavor to protect the principles of justice and accountability.

As the call for reform continues, Friend's experiences highlight the need for vigilance and integrity within all levels of law enforcement. His commitment to truth and justice inspires others to speak out against corruption and advocate for a system that truly serves the people.
